PRESS RELEASE – May 2012
An ambitious sustainable housing development at Westmead Lane, Chippenham designed by Aaron Evans Architects has won Chippenham Civic Society’s Conservation and Environment Award.
Bath based practice, Aaron Evans Architects were appointed by GreenSquare Group, on behalf of Westlea Housing Association, to design a 'landmark' residential building on the site of an existing hostel. The scheme, built by E.G. Carter & Co was completed in May 2011 and opened by local MP Duncan Haynes. It marked Westlea’s 10,000th home taken into management.
The development is in a prime, waterside location in Chippenham and was formally the site of an unpopular, unsightly and unsustainable hostel for the homeless which was decanted and demolished to make way for the new development. Set within the Conservation Area the design recognises the former industrial riverside heritage of this part of the town, follows sound urban design principles and positively addresses the River Avon.
The nine 3-storey townhouses are built to meet Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and have strong ‘green’ credentials including highly insulated and airtight timber frame construction, whole-house heat recovery, ‘on-site’ renewable energy generation through discreet, roof-mounted Photo-Voltaic panels, low energy / water fixtures and fittings, large windows maximising riverside views and natural daylight and provides good access to local amenities and public transport links. The Civic Society Award recognises the high quality of the design and construction of these new homes. This gateway new development is an attractive, prominent land mark development at the entrance to Chippenham Town Centre. In his introduction to the scheme at the Awards ceremony on Tuesday evening, 15 "Chippenham Civic Society, with Councils and other agencies, makes every effort to improve the quality of the town's riverside, repairing the damage inflicted upon it by poor development during the 60's and 70's. The building previously occupying the site was an awful blot on the riverside landscape, and it has been a huge pleasure for all to see it replaced by such a fine piece of architecture. The building is sculptural and contemporary, it reflects the historic industrial use of the area, relates well to the river, and is a great landmark on a major entrance to the town. It also provides much needed quality town centre homes." Aaron Evans Architects Director, Kevin Murphy said, "we are very pleased to have received the Award and would like to thank the Civic Society for their recognition of our work".
